Mixed construction
Mixed construction is a modern building method based on the cooperation of steel cross-sections (metal elements) and elements of reinforced concrete and it aims at making the best out of their properties for the benefit of the construction. The building method of a mixed construction made of a metal load bearing structure is also far superior to the classic prefabricated constructions. The flexibility of mixed constructions as regards the architectural elements that can be achieved and the anti-seismic properties provided thanks to its technological superiority cannot be encountered in classic prefabricated constructions.
Advantages
- It provides anti-seismic fortification. Pillars and beams are made of steel cross-sections that fortify the building against earthquakes.
- It guarantees stable and high construction specifications because the parts of the load bearing structure (metal beams – metal pillars) are products of industrial production.
- It provides freedom of architectural design. It allows the creation of large unified spaces with no pillars in between, which cannot be encountered in the classic prefabricated constructions that have a limitation in openings.
- It is advisable for the construction of multi-storey buildings without using oversized metal elements.
- It favors expansion in height, due to lower weight.
- It demands less delivery time (almost half of the time demanded for a conventional construction with a load bearing structure made of reinforced concrete).
- It allows for a reduced social security contribution (IKA) (50% less than the conventional one).
- It demands a lower foundation cost because of the smaller loads burdening it.
- This particular construction method is recommended throughout the world and also in Greece, especially in areas with intense seismic events, due to high durability in case of an earthquake.
- There is no transportation cost (in the case of mixed construction, the metal framework is made in the factory and it is built in the construction on the spot within a few hours).
- Reduction in excavations and in the total volume of the foundation due to the lower weight of the construction
- Easy rectification of damages
- Reduction of demolition cost (dismantling)
- Optimization of sound insulation and thermal insulation possibilities
- Maximization of the reliability and accuracy of the construction method, due to the industrial production of the basic building elements in a controlled environment with quality procedures

Additionally, a mixed construction has got multiple environmental benefits. Reduced pollutants, less noise pollution, reduced waste and energy saving thanks to the new insulation technologies are some of the benefits that tend to characterize a mixed construction as more environmentally friendly.
